2016 Strassenfelt
Five of us attended the Strassenfest this year to spend time with our “extended families” in Backnang. It is always wonderful to spend time with friends and renew old acquaintances. Alan Arnot gave a speech on behalf of the Chelmsford Town Twinning Association to the people of Backnang.
2014 Autumn Quiz
The quiz went well on Friday night (14/11/2014), and the winning team was again the “Sandon Froggies. We would like to thank our quizmasters, Roy Whitehead and his wife Jackie, for organising this event.
2014 Essex & Suffolk Town Twinning Congress
The CTTA held its Annual General Meeting recently at the Heritage Centre, Galleywood. The well-attended evening saw the re-election of David Jones as Chairman, Liz Sutton as Hon Secretary and Elaine Oddie as Hon Treasurer, with all other committee members remaining in post and new member Nicole Gay being welcomed to the committee.
The Chairman gave his annual report, starting with the Backnang Blasorchester which gave an excellent concert in Chelmsford Cathedral in October 2013. From Chelmsford there were visits to Backnang for the Advent Market with the usual successful produce stand, and for the Strassenfest in June. The two Quizzes were good fund-raising events in Chelmsford and the association hosted the Essex and Suffolk Twinning Congress in October. This was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Chelmsford and by Nicholas Charrington, High Sheriff of Essex, who spoke about the past and present role of his office. The association is always trying to raise the profile of twinning in Chelmsford and with this in mind Jackie Arnot gave a well-received talk at the Quadrant in July. The Chairman emphasised the need for more awareness of the advantages that twinning can bring to the city and hopes that future audiences for this will be kept informed by media of all types.
After the official business had been completed, members looked forward to the anniversary celebrations due to take place in 2015/16, celebrating 25 years with Backnang and 20 years with Annonay. To help us remember the early days of twinning, talks were given by John Wilson, Birgit Wilkinson, Janet Rauch and John Cox. All were involved at the very beginning of our original link with Backnang and had entertaining memories to share before the evening ended with a chance to chat and enjoy a ploughman’s meal.
2014 CTTA AGM Report
On Saturday 11th October Chelmsford Town Twinning Association hosted the Essex and Suffolk Town Twinning Congress at the Heritage Centre, Galleywood. Some 40 delegates from 30 twinning associations across Essex and Suffolk attended this annual congress to discuss the opportunities and challenges of town twinning in the 21st century. The Mayor and Mayoress of Chelmsford were present for the event and delegates were treated to an informative and amusing talk by guest speaker Nicholas Charrington, the High Sheriff of Essex, about the past and present roles of the High Sheriff.
2015 sees the 25th anniversary of twinning between Chelmsford and Backnang in Germany and celebrations are planned in both Chelmsford and Backnang to commemorate this event.
